Real life dog thing
I'm really upset about something to do with one of my dogs... feel free to skip this.

Rebel, the candied-walnut eating hound I've mentioned a few times here before, has a genetic strucutral kidney defect that leaves him prone to urinary tract infections. It also makes him at high risk for kidney disease. (This is the extreme nutshell verison of his medical history.)

He's been not quite right for a few days, although I couldn't quite put my finger on what was wrong. Finally it seemed he might have had a bladder infection, even though he's had those before and this wasn't really the same. But I took him to the vet yesterday, where they did tests, the results of which we'll get tomorrow. He really wasn't particularly sick, he was eating well and had lots of energy, even though he still didn't seem like himself.

Last night at around midnight he started throwing up. He threw up for several hours, and stopped at around 5:30 this morning. I took him out three times (he won't go to the bathroom in the yard), so I'm a complete wreck today.

I'm glad it's Sunday so at least I don't have to work, but I'm just so upset.

I know how you feel. Worrying about a sick pet is so hard.
I have two four year-old dogs and I adore them. One had a bladder stone recently and I had to take two days off of work to take care of him. Some people seem to think that was strange - but to me it was the only choice. They're part of my family.

I would think that there is a very good chance that he just has some sort of bug. Try to keep a positive attitude if possible.

I'll be thinking about you and sending you best wishes from the East coast.

Thinking of you both and hope you have a successful outcome. It's so distressing when our canine and feline children are ill.

A sick dog can take it right out of you, I know. I've spent the last year with my 8 year old lab dealing with various problems (cancer being one of them) so I know how upsetting this can be.

I would caution against connecting the dots too quickly. I have a dog that occasionally starts going outside to barf around midnight and then continues for about the next 3 hours. She doesn't barf all the time, but her stomach is upset and she goes outside to eat grass. She has a sensitive stomach and seems to have these bouts when she eats something that doesn't agree with her. The one time I went to the emergency vet at 4 am was when she ended up having a ulcer (from medication.)

Is he drinking water? Do his gums look a healthy pink? What about an emergency vet clinic? My experience is that they aren't that expensive, especially if the dog isn't admitted. I'm glad I took her, and it turned out it was a serious problem, but I would have gladly paid $100 just for the piece of mind.

I know this is upsetting, believe me. Luckily you'll have the test results tomorrow, and you can move forward from there.

rebel's a good dog.
Rebel is beautiful. (but you knew that)
My heart is with you both (god, i hope you knew that)
I won't make promises about him being okay, i'll just say you're the most responsible pet owner i know and you'll make sure he's as okay as he can be, he's a lucky dog.

also, i loved risks 6 so much i re-read it this morning even though i'd already fed you back, so there.

Oh, that's terrible, Xie. :( I know just how you feel. My dogs are my babies and Annie gave me an awful scare a couple of weeks ago that had us at the emergency vet clinic at 11pm. Thankfully everything came out okay, but I was snuggling her extra close for several days after that. And she's also had some urinary tract problems before and there's some question about just how well her kidneys function so I know what it's like to always be watching for warning signs as well.

It's good you trusted your instincts and took Rebel to the vet when you did even though he seemed generally okay. I believe strongly in a mother's intuition whether the kids are two legged or four. Just know I'm thinking about you and Rebel today and hoping everything turns out okay. *hugs for you both and ear scratches for the other pups*

I’m so sorry this is happening. I hope he’s feeling better soon, and that you get good news with the test results. I understand how it feels to want to make them all better, but you’re doing everything you can. Sometimes these things just take time, both to diagnose and then to heal from. You’ll both be in my thoughts.

Were you able to touch base with your Vet today? I know our Vet actually has an answering service if the need to touch base with the doctors becomes necessary.

I hope the Vet is able to diagnose and treat Rebel promptly. I hate when one of my cats are unwell, especially if I'm not sure if I can help.

*Hugs to you & Rebel*

I'm sticking with: he's upset because of the dedication unless you hear different. ;) Try and get some rest and give him a hug from me!

Try not to worry. Is he eating today? Is he peeing okay?

Among my other talents, I managed an animal hospital for 10 years. I know way too much about animals. Feel free to email me with any questions (even if you think they are silly). My good friend is a vet and a phonecall away (usually). *hugs*

Sorry about your puppy. I hope he starts feeling better soon.

Sometimes just laying with them (even if it's on the floor) helps them feel a little better and be less scared.

Candied Walnut Eating Hound
Darling, he is simply suffering from candied walnut withdrawal. Ok, that sounded stupid, but wanted to make you smile.

I know how you love and care for your pets. I am sorry he is not feeling well *pets Rebel*

*pets Xie, kisses eyebrow, makes tea*

Re: Candied Walnut Eating Hound
OMG, did you see silent_seas made me a Rebel icon? Sigh.

Thank you, my darling, for petting me, and for petting Rebel, and for the kisses and tea!

He's much better now, and hopefully we'll both sleep tonight!

Good luck with getting some rest and his results. Animals can really make us worry, even though he does "naughty" things I bet you love him lots and can't stand to see him sick. I am a cat person, but can definitely relate to this. Poor baby :(

What do you feed him? We feed all of our animals Science Diet, per my uncle, the vet. It really helps with the UT problems on both the cats and dogs.
