My Harry Potter Moments, Revealed
So, thank you to everyone for indulging my "decades late to the party" interest in the Harry Potter series!

My favorite character, as some of you guessed and many of you decided was "too obvious," is Snape. And the reason why is because, if you'll recall, I'm a sucker for the soulmate thing, and the enormity of his love for Lily Potter, the purity of it, really moved me.

I suppose I should have cried when Dobby died, or Hedwig, or even Lily, but I didn't. I cried once only, when Dumbledore was telling Snape that Harry had to die to stop Voldemort, and Snape objected, and Dumbledore said, "Don't tell me you've come to care for the boy?"

And Snape performed the Patronus charm, and we saw the doe sparkle around the room, then vanish. And Dumbledore says, "Lily? Still?"

And Snape says, "Always."

And I got tears in my eyes.

Normally it's not the romantic love in a story that moves me. There were so many big, huge themes in this story, and many of them were incredibly powerful. I'm really not sure why that was the one that got me. But Snape was EVIL, he was a Death Eater, and he betrayed Voldemort, returned to Dumbledore, risked everything for years after, protected a child he detested, and ultimately suffered and died, to honor this person who was kind to him, and treated him as a friend and equal. Yes, he was in love with her and she wasn't in love with him, but even in ending their friendship she at least showed him the respect of doing it for good reasons (his douchebaggery) rather than some silly misunderstanding.

The only other thing I'll say is that I'm firmly in the camp that doesn't want to dip a toe into the fanfic side of HP. I'm very happy with the canonical relationships and characters, and how everything was resolved. And you know me, I have a hard time leaving canon behind even when I'm NOT happy with it, LOL!

But I'm really glad that I finally read the books and saw the films. I had no idea how many cultural references I'd been missing... Harry Potter terms and concepts have pervaded culture everywhere, and now I know it when I see or hear it.

I also just plain enjoyed the experience of reading a long, well-plotted series, followed by an even longer series of films that were brilliantly acted -- the casting in them was stunningly good.

So while I'll never be a fangirl, I'm definitely a fan.

And again, thanks to everyone for patiently listening to me discover something most of you have known all along.

Love,

Xie

HP
Almost you persuade me to read and watch. It was the 'cultural references' thing that got me.

I will check with Samantha on whether she has all the books. FanSee

When people I know talk about how much they hate Snape, it makes my heart hurt.

He is in many ways detestable, and yet there is an honor and purity at the core of him.

Ah, the soulmate thing, of course! So I'm guessing you're not on the Snarry train. ;-)

Always glad to welcome a new fan!

No. Snape and any of the students makes me sick. But Lily's son? I can't believe there's anyone alive who finds that appealing.

LOL. I'm actually not on the Snarry train either, but I'm pretty sure it's the second-biggest slash pairing. Oh, fandom.

I guess those people just got something utterly different from the story than I did.

Read them, I begged. You'll LIKE them, I wheedled.

Y U NO LISSEN YEARS AGO!?!?!?!?

Snape was, is, and will always be my favorite character. I have always gone for the bad boys, the broken souls, the ambivalent ones in the shadows. JK Rowling once stated that she could not, for the life of her, understand why people liked Sev so much. She said she enjoyed writing him, that he was her favorite to write, but that she didn't like him. Which explains so very much about how she didn't understand her own characters. I often thought the actors understood the characters much better than she ever did. Especially Jason Isaacs. He GOT Lucius Malfoy in a way that she never did. While he enjoyed the 'drag-queen' thrill of donning his Lucius gear, he understood how fundamentally fucked up Lucius' ideals and ideas were, and he got the 'light-bulb moment' of what was important to him. Image. Always. And how that was wiped out with Voldemort taking his wand away. Yes, I have deep love for Lucius. He's a dickhead that owns me.

Let me know when you're ready to debate the "Dumbledore was the REAL Dark Lord of the series" angle. *rubs hands with glee*

Oh, and I WILL get you to read HP slash. Just give in. You'll thank me later. XDDD

You were right about the books, but wrong about the fic, slash or otherwise. :)

I really like the story as told. Adding fanon and fake relationships would ruin it for me. And you know, I don't have a thing for m/m, unless it's Brian and Justin, so I have no motivation to read slash in the first place.

I'll add that I don't LIKE Snape. I would say I agree with the author, that I find him fascinating as a character, and he touches my heart, but "like" him, as in want to talk to him? No.

I loved Sev. I knew there was something wrong with him from the beginning, and I couldn't wait to find out what it was. As a person? I'd put Veritaserum in his tea and get him to spill. Then again, him being a Potions Master, he'd prolly know I did it. Although...I'd be an excellent Occlumens. I have enough random shit going through my brain at any given time that he'd never be able to read me. lol

There is so much fanon in this fandom, considering how long it's been around. And yet, the fanon for the most part, isn't really that off the mark. It's canon through a filter, of sorts. That whole "Harry and Draco were meant for each other" thing? If people can't see that what they were doing for seven years was pulling each others pigtails, I don't know what to tell you. Cause yeah, they so were. *nods*

A little late to respond to the other post but: Oh, Snape. Once and forever and for always, Snape. And that was the part that got me as well.

ariadne_mitos covered my reasons for loving Snape in the other post beautifully.

But I'm also probably heretical in that I think the only *major* character deaths in the books were Snape and Dumbledore.

Also: I don't read any HP fanfic really, no interest, except for this one: http://archiveofourown.org/works/110794. A crossover between Harry Potter and Discworld.

Snape's characterisation throughout the books and the movies was utterly intriguing, and I must confess to being most moved by his story, too. Such devotion and motivation driven by his love for the one girl he couldn't have. I may have cried a little with each death in series, but it was all out sobs with "the prince's tale." It's the only part I cry in now on repeated viewings of the movies.

This is why I was never tempted to read HP fanfic. I don't have any unanswered questions, I liked how the books progressed and turned out, and even if I was sad when the saga was over I recognized that the story was told and it was time to wrap things up. Quite the opposite of how QAF made me feel, which is why I started reading QAF fanfic!
