What's your fandom "Golden Age"?
I saw some Glee fans waxing nostalgic over Kurt and Blaine’s Dalton days, and it made me think of my own fandom “Golden Ages.” For Xena, it’s the period after Gabrielle becomes an Amazon, but before the rift between the two of them. I wish that period could have just lasted forever, and while I have never written much XWP fic, what little I’ve written is set in that period.

My Queer as Folk “Golden Age” is not strictly canonical, although I wish it was. In my imagination, it’s the time period after Justin has lost the bet in Season Four, but before Brian gets cancer, which in canon lasted for zero seconds, as in winning the bet, Brian finds out he has cancer. In my fantasy world, Justin’s back at PIFA, Brian’s at Kinnetik, and they have some time… months, years, as much as we can get… of their grown-up, non-monogamous, unconventional, yet SO MARRIED Season Four relationship, which is my favorite of all the seasons for how they are together.

In between Justin going nuts with a gun and Brian getting his ball cut off, I mean.

So… what is your fandom, and what is your favorite time period in either canon or imagination?

Well, except for Theodore's frightening hair.

I'd have to agree with you. That brief little blip of happiness they must have had. That and probably about 6 months after Justin moved to NY. By then he would have realized that he can paint anywhere and decided that Briton was where he wanted to paint. I can totally see him just deciding and arranging it all and then informing Brian of it after the fact. He has the Brian Kinney user manual all figured out and knows it by heart. I don't for one freaking minute believe that all the hard work he put into actually getting Brian to believe he was worthy and deserving of love, he would just toss aside for his art. He's always done both, side by side. Justin will still need to be in NY for shows and to meet with galleries, but I don't believe he would need to live their full time. After all the crap that Brian and Justin have been through, I don't see this step being their final one. Post 513 fics are some of my all time favorites. :)

Well, but why doesn't BRIAN throw aside his career for Justin's love?

But I don't see this as Justin tossing over his career for Brian, but coming to the realization that he can paint any where. Artists have more freedom in that respect than someone that holds an office job. I don't see this as sacrificing, but comprising.

Today is my 12th wedding anniversary. There is a TON of compromise to make a relationship work. I don't think Brian and Justin have that bit figured out yet. Hopefully they grow up some!!

I was responding to this:

"I don't for one freaking minute believe that all the hard work he put into actually getting Brian to believe he was worthy and deserving of love, he would just toss aside for his art."

I think they do have a challenge to face, which is where they're going to live, either together or individually, and how their relationship will best work for the two of them. And clearly if they're going to live in one place, someone has to move, LOL.

But I'm a writer, and while I can technically live anywhere, there are better and worse places for me to live for my career. And while Justin can paint anywhere, that's not all that goes into creating. You need to live somewhere that works for you creatively as well as opportunity-wise.

I am not a big fan of compromise, personally, though, and it colors everything I do. I want to believe that they'll transcend the usual compromise and find a way they both have everything exactly the way they want it. Unrealistic though that may be. ;)

I really love the latest Sherlock Holmes movies and the TV series Sherlock. The rapport between Holmes and Watson in both shows is excellent.
In QAF I love the relationship that developed after the greatest reunification scene ever and then I move to post 513. I like the idea that he has returned to Brian because he knows that he can paint anywhere. He just needs Brian to be close by.

I think their relationship was very much the same -- that joking equality and easy trust -- in late S3 and S4, with the exception of the Pink Posse and Brian's cancer freak-out. But I love Kinnetik, and am not wild Justin working for Brian longterm; I also love to think of Justin at PIFA.

For Queer as Folk, I think it was season 3, just after Brian and Justin got back together and are weirdly married and supportive of each other.

For Torchwood, it's season 2 in general, but specifically the time between Owen being okay with living death and Gwen getting married. That's like one episode, but I imagine it's a long time between.

For Supernatural, it's all of season 2 because the seasons afterward sucked.

For Doctor Who, series one of New!Who with the Ninth Doctor, or the Old!Who series with the Seventh Doctor and Ace McShane.

Wow I'm in a lot of fandoms.

I have only been in one fandom, QAF.
S4 is not my favorite mainly because Justin acts crazy in the beginning and I don't like cancer themed stories. But I would have loved the period in between the way you described it.
My golden age is S3, after the office scene in 308 but before Brian gets fired.
I would have loved to see more of that honey moon, cha cha period, when they seem so lost into each other. I would have loved to see them working together on an account, flirting and interacting at the office while the rest of the staff is oblivious as to the true natute of their relationship. I would have liked to see more of them conspiring and scheming to bring Stockwell down.
This period was just too short for me!

I enjoyed it a LOT... I loved their banter while Justin was interning. But I don't think Justin working for Brian would have been healthy longterm. Do you?

No, not in the longterm.
But I did want more. Things sped up a lot in those episodes. And there was not a lot of office interaction to satisfy my kink IMO (but the little that was there was delicious. I think I would have liked more of the double meaning 308 scenes but with them being together!)

And here I thought you didn't mind a little angst. If you'd ask me what inspires me to write most, I would have answered that it's either Season 1 or Post-513. But that wasn't the question. I love their first period of actual togetherness, lots of hot shower sex and that during that period, most other couples and citizens of Liberty Avenue are in a good place as well. Michael has finally found Ben, Ted and Emmett are still friends, the lesbians are pretty happy, there's Leda (squee) and a flirtatious Debbie.

Actually, I think they fuck up from 204 on. There are moments of beauty, but their relationship I find extremely unhealthy in S2. I wish Justin had moved out before they made up the rules. I don't mean I wish they'd broken up, but that Justin had moved back in with Debbie. Those boys were a trainwreck. :(

Like yours, my 'golden age' is a bit we never got to see - the time (and again, like yours in my mind it goes on for ages) between 314 and 401. The time when Justin was back to really seeing Brian and when Brian was ready to accept the 'not everything' comment and what it meant; the time when they apparently both acknowledged that they were partners. That time.

*sigh*
