Cagney and Lacey
Is there such a thing as Cagney and Lacey fan fiction? Something [livejournal.com profile] flamencanyc  said made me wonder. There was no Internet then and I'd never heard of "fandom" or "fanfic," but if there were and if I had, I think that really would have been my first fandom... and Christine Cagney was my first fannish obsession. I loved her, god, so much it hurt.

Yes, I wanted to save her, but please understand, I was v v young at the time.

And yes, yes, I do see the parallels between Christine/Mary Beth and Xena/Gabrielle and Brian/Justin. We can all agree I'm the most predictable fangirl who ever fangirled anyone in the history of fangirlishness, ever.

Considering Googling "cagney and lacey" "fan fiction" yields over 800 hits, and "cagney and lacey" fanfic yields over 1400, I'd say the answer is yes.

Given the subject matter, it would never have occurred to me that there wouldn't be a ton of it.

Considering only ONE season was out on DVD as of a year ago, I just figured most people hadn't seen it... I mean, I'm old, LOL...

Oh, and the rest still aren't out on DVD! It's still just S1...

Cagney and Lacey was one of my favorite shows back then! I LOVED Cagney; of course the Internet was sci-fi way back then! Now that you mention it, Xie, I do see parallels! (God, I wonder if there's any C/L slash out there?) :) :) :)

I MUST FIND OUT!

Although I've always had a deep aversion to non-canonical pairings. But I'm constantly doing stuff I swore I'd never do, so why stop now, LOL?

But I'm constantly doing stuff I swore I'd never do

I've found myself doing a whole lot of that myself in the past year or so!! :) Ever since I found QAF vids on YouTube and then somehow gravitated over to LJ and fanfics ... nothing has been the same since! Thank God!! :)

Judging Amy
Judging Amy was one of the truly great series in the
90's, with Amy Branneman as a juvenile court judge and Tyne Daly, as her mother.
Tyne Daly is social worker who pushes buttons to get her
job done. Naturally, she's on the right side.
In one of the last episodes, Sharon Gless shows up as her
old friend when they were both police partners,( mirroring
the original Cagney and Lacey program) now
a Congresswoman who has been called in to get Daly to
reign in her unordodox ways or lose her job -- and her pension.
It was grand, altho it would have been even better if they
had worked Brian and Justin in.
xoxoxo

Re: Judging Amy
Oh God, I love that show! It was in re-runs on TNT during the day and I watched the whole series all the way through at least 5 times until they finally replaced it with Las Vegas (blech!) I hated that the network never let Amy and Bruce give in to the sexual tension! Why must they make us suffer?? They needed to have Brian and Justin invite Amy and Bruce over for dinner and then just watch them fuck! Networks are soooo uptight! :)

DO IT DO IT DO IT!

It was Xena for lesbians before we had a Xena... there used to be Cagney and Lacey viewing parties at the many, many dyke bars we had back in those days in San Francisco. And Christine Cagney is just so BROODING and WOUNDED and HOT...

Okay, you've convinced me! But ... but, only ONE season is out on DVD? This may be a problem.

hmmm. I've not come across any fanfic but I've had to read about Cagney and Lacey a few times here in grad school. There is a fabulous book about the women and the show:

Defining Women: Television and the Case of Cagney & Lacey by Julie D'Acci

If you want to hear about the consequences of homophobia
on a career, look up what happened to Meg Foster, who played
Chris Cagney before Sharon Gless. Her career was pretty
much ruined because some network execs thought she was
"too dykey."

Sharon Gless was a beautiful woman, but Meg Foster was
stunning.

Thanks for pointing that out. I was unaware of any of that and found it very interesting to read about.

Well, on the one hand, I find Meg Foster creepy and didn't miss her AT ALL, while also being apalled at the homophobia behind her replacement. But I'd have never gotten into the show like I did without the chemistry between Tyne Daley and Sharon Gless.

And just a gentle reminder, in case it slipped your mind or you didn't know: I'm a 50 year old lesbian who grew up in and lives in San Francisco and was a women's studies major at UC Berkeley in the 80s. If it's something about LGBT or feminist cultural history, I think you can assume I already know about it and don't need things like "If you want to hear" prefacing this kind of info. Thanks!

I'm talking to everyone who reads and posts here. And
I'm 54 and have been teaching gay lit and queer culture
for over 25 years at my university, but I don't always
presume that everyone, even LGBT folks, always know
everything about popular culture and the history of
gay representation in the media. Hey, I certainly don't
know everything, but I'll give out information when it
fits. Meg Foster, no matter what any viewer might think
about her, was screwed by her producers and her network
because of their perception of her possible "lesbian feel" --
that's how male TV execs read her and because of it they
fired her from the show. The ghost of Foster always
shadowed the series -- and Gless and Daley knew it.
The fans kept the show alive even when the network
would have rather dumped it.

I too loved Christine. She was beautiful. Often. She was tough, smart, oh, yes. I did dig her.

If there is I know a few people who would like some links.... :)

Did you ask this because you are planning to write some? :)

I won't write any, at least not, Christine/Mary Beth "slash." I tried to last night just to READ some, and found my "non-canonical pairings" aversion is as strong as ever. I can't read a sexual relationship between them.

If there is gen (by which I mean, no het, either), it's possible I'd read that, but I can't imagine writing it unless they release the whole series on DVD and I can watch it again. It's been decades since I saw the show. I wouldn't be able to do it justice.
