I know I'm joking about feeling sorry for myself, but the cough really is fucking terrifying. Fortunately it's not frequent at all... I go hours between coughs.

That is truly horrific. It sounds as though the lungs are turning themselves inside out.

As it happens, I just had my wisdom teeth out, so I am spending this weekend full of self-pity too.

I've had that cough myself, and it is truly awful. As someone who gets bronchitis at least once a year (and has asthma, oh joy), I feel for you -- there is nothing worse than feeling like you have no air at all and that you are hacking your lungs up. Yech! You are in my thoughts! I hope you feel better soon!

“You've got what?” Brian asks.

“Whooping cough, so don't bother coming up this weekend. It's contagious you know.”

“How the fuck did you get whooping cough? What are you, fucking 10 years old?”

“No, the little shit next door is. He sneezed on me when I was checking the mail.”

“And you have the constitution of a 90 year old so you caught it, of course. Fuck.”

“I wish. But not this weekend, I guess. Fuck, this sucks Brian.”

Brian runs a hand through his hair. "Well there's not much we can do about it. You got meds?”

“Yeah.” Justin says, just as he breaks into a coughing fit.

“Fuck! Justin are you all right?” Brian asks, frightened at the gasping sounds he hears.

“Justin?!”

Brian hears Justin struggling to regain his breath. Eventually he does.

“I'm okay,” wheezes Justin.

“Fuck. Can you even fucking breathe? It is always this bad?”

“No, no I'm fine now. It comes and goes. It sounds worse than it is Brian. Don't worry about it, okay?”

“Yeah okay Sunshine. Go lie down or something. I'll talk to you later.”

Justin whimpers, the knocking won't stop and he thinks he's going to have to get up and answer the door after all.

He drags himself out of bed and stumbles to the door with only one eye open. His sleep schedule's totally fucked up and his coughing fits tire him out.

Brian's at his door.

He blinks.

Still there.

He rubs his eyes. Blinks again.

Brian smirks. “Believe it, Sunshine. I really am this hot.”

“Brian? What are you doing here?”

“I happened to have a free schedule this weekend... Jesus Justin, are you even awake? Move over.”

Justin steps aside and Brian enters the apartment. He puts a paper bag down on Justin's coffee table.

“What's that?” asks Justin, nodding at the bag.

“Soup. Picked it up from that place you like around the corner.”

Justin's face softens. He smiles. “Brian.”

He steps forward, one step then two, then Brian's holding him. He breathes in the clean smell of Brian's shirt, the light smell of his cologne.

“You smell good,” he says.

“You smell,” Brian replies.

Justin huffs out a laugh. “Fuck you.”

“Not this weekend remember?”

“Oh god. I'm going to kill that fucking kid. You have no idea how much I want to suck your cock right now. I'd probably start coughing and choke to death though.”

“What a way to go,” laughs Brian, stroking the hair at the nape of Justin's neck.

"I don't want you catching it Brian. You should have stayed home."

I had bronchitis/pneumonia multiple times growing up, and I remember how scary it was to cough enough in one spell to vomit/pass out.
