I find this an incredibly important thought process for Brian. He can’t articulate, even in his head, why Justin wanted to return to him. But I really think he knows that Justin had to come back. Not that it was a cop-out or that he couldn’t survive without Brian. But instead that Justin is “better” when he’s with Brian. And Brian is better when he’s with Justin. It’s not about needing to be taken care of. But rather that they each allow the other to be the best of who they are. Something that just doesn’t happen when they’re apart.

This was the key, for me, to Justin coming back and it not being any kind of defeat for him, and it being something Brian could ultimately accept.

It's not up to Brian to decide where Justin's going to live, anyway. That's Justin's call. And I think in the end Brian would respect that.

Did Justin need to go to New York? I don't think he did. Did he WANT to? I don't see why he wouldn't give it a try. In my world, he didn't care for it, but if he had, he could have stayed, and as I said before, have a long distance relationship with Brian, or Brian would have moved to New York. I don't see why people have to act like those things would all be so OMG unbelievable. People do them every day.
