I have some problems with the rings, but I felt I needed to deal with them, because in canon, they were important. In 513, Justin seemed so moved by Brian saying he didn't return them, and, in Plans, that was the moment Justin formulated his plan, so it was pretty crucial to my story. So it seemed to me, both from canon and my own story, I needed to not just let them molder in the safe.

I wrote about thirty different ring scenes over the time I wrote this series, and this was the first one that worked for me. I thought, yeah, they'll decide to wear them in the middle of a fight.
