I didn't see that coming. I guess I expected the rings to be part of underlying issues, important but still not exactly at the forefront, for a while longer.

There's anger, grief, frustration, desperation, insecurity....and also a strong sense of not giving up. They're refusing to allow circumstances or their own personalities to take away what they have with each other. Brian is almost literally fighting his own demons here.
